The ripe fruit is ready to leave the branch, it will fall as soon as a slight breeze blows. In the same way, a seeker standing on the last step, ready to be released from the bondage of the world, with the mere hearing of which sentence, he leaves the edge of the world, is called Mahavakya.
Mahavakya means that there is no other sentence greater than this. After which one do not have to speak the second sentence. It is not a matter for extroverts. Whose intellect incited with disinterest and the desires of the world burned to ashes, when this Mahavakya fell in their ears, there was a perpetual silence in their heartland.
Mahavakya are four, today the discussion of two-
“Pragyanam Brahm” and “Ayamatma Brahm”
Lokeshanand suggests that read every word carefully.
1-Pragyanam Brahm (Aitraiya Upnishad 5/1)-
The one who knows the scenes of the world through senses and mind, who is the knower, who is your true self, who is you, his name is ‘Pragyan’.
The one consciousness pervading the entire universe is ‘Brahmatattva’.
Whatever change is there is only in the body and the world. This Pragyan always remains one and remains the same. It is not the doer or the sufferer, it is the knower. Whatever this Pragyan knows, if he leaves the petty ego of all of that known, then this Pragyan is Brahm. Because there is no difference of even the tip of the hair in knowingness of Pragyan and Brahm.
2-Aayamatma Brahm (Brihadkaranya Upnishad 2/5/19) –
Your self-light, which extends from the ego to the body, the witness of the senses etc., the self-element within everyone, which is you. This self element is neither hidden, nor ever seen. It is neither indirect nor direct, but it is ever-present. ‘This Atma’ is ‘Ayamatma’.
The true element of this mortal world, which always remains, even when nothing remain, is ‘Brahm’.
This soul is Brahm. Apart from that there is no other substance called Brahm.
Now you, who are hiding in this imaginary earthen effigy called body, and performing illusions of birth and death etc., thoughtfully, take off the sheet of carcass of meat lying on your true form, throw it away and fearlessly declare the Mahavakya.
